How We Test

Last updated: October 8, 2026

Most buying guides on the internet claim to have "tested" dozens of products in a lab. We don't make that claim — because we don't run a lab. Here's exactly what we do instead, and why we think it's more useful for everyday dog supplies.

We start from real-life scenarios

Every guide begins with a situation, not a spec sheet: a puppy who inhales dinner in nine seconds, a senior dog who hesitates at the stairs, a 6 a.m. walk in the rain. We define what "good" looks like in that scenario first — then go looking for products that fit it. If a product can't be tied to a real problem it solves, it doesn't make the guide.

We compare published specifications

For every product we feature, we pull the facts from the manufacturer's own published materials: dimensions, materials, weight limits, care instructions, what's in the box. We record a "last checked" date on every product card because specifications change — and we'd rather show you our work than ask for blind trust.

We synthesize verified owner feedback

Spec sheets don't tell you whether a harness chafes after a month or whether a "washable" bed survives a real washing machine. So we read through large volumes of verified owner reviews and look for patterns: the same praise repeated across dozens of households is a signal; the same complaint repeated is a louder one. When owners consistently disagree with the marketing, we say so.

What we don't do

How picks stay independent

DogeEmoji earns through affiliate commissions when readers buy through our links — that's disclosed in our Affiliate Disclosure and in a box on every guide. The firewall is simple: the research team picks products by the criteria above, and the business side has no vote. You'll notice every guide names real tradeoffs, tells specific owners to skip specific products, and compares cheaper alternatives. That's the independence, in practice.

If you spot a factual error in any guide — a wrong dimension, a discontinued product, a spec that changed — tell us at [email protected]. Corrections are the fastest way we get better.
